Billionaire sex offender is willing to pledge his $77 million NYC townhouse and his brother’s $105,000 condo near West Palm to secure his release.
Billionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is willing to ground his private jet and pledge his $77 million Manhattan townhouse along with his younger brother’s $105,000 condo near West Palm Beach to secure his release from jail on sex-trafficking charges, his attorneys said in court papers filed Thursday.
Claiming there is a good chance the 66-year-old will beat the two charges federal prosecutors in New York City filed against him this week, his attorneys outlined steps Epstein is willing to take so he can be released on bond while he awaits trial.
In a request that will be vigorously opposed by federal prosecutors, who describe Epstein as “a serious flight risk,” the politically-connected money manager on Monday will ask U.S. District Judge Richard Berman to let him be outfitted with an electronic ankle bracelet so he can return to his palatial home on the city’s Upper East Side.
In return, the part-time Palm Beach resident would be willing to pay a substantial amount of money and hand over the mortgages to his townhouse, his brother Mark Epstein’s condo in the Golden Lakes retirement community and unidentified property owned by his friend, David Mitchell, said his attorneys Reid Weingarten and Martin Weinberg.
Contrary to claims by prosecutors, Epstein only owns one jet, having sold his other aircraft last month, they said. He will take steps so he can’t use it, they said.
Further, they said, Epstein has only one passport, not three, as prosecutors claimed. Epstein, who counted President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton, Britain’s Prince Andrew as well as other celebrities as friends, has already forfeited it.
While Weingarten suggested that a trustee be appointed to live in the townhouse, he said Epstein is also willing to hire armed guards to watch him around the clock. He would also sign a document, agreeing to be extradited from any country in the world, Weingarten said.
Despite the media frenzy that has turned Epstein into an international pariah, Weingarten said Epstein has good a chance of beating the charges that Weingarten claims are based on the “government’s illegal position.”
“Popular condemnation aside, compelling legal issues stand between Mr. Epstein and any possible conviction on the allegations of conduct from 14 to 17 years ago pressed in the indictment,” the defense attorney wrote.
New York U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman says he is pursuing Epstein for operating a vast sex ring of underage girls from his homes in Palm Beach and New York. But, Weingarten says, the Florida charges were resolved by then-South Florida U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta in 2007 when he signed off on a non-prosecution agreement with Epstein. Acosta is now U.S. labor secretary.
Weingarten said he vehemently disagreed with Berman’s premise that the allegations are new because he is focusing on phone calls Epstein allegedly made from New York to bring teens to his Palm Beach mansion for nude massages, that for many led to sex.
Berman has also said the victims, some as young as 14, are different than those who were involved in the decade-old Florida case.
In his 15-page letter to the judge, Weingarten echoed a claim Acosta made in a press conference on Wednesday. The federal government has no business pursuing Epstein because the types of sex crimes he is accused of are the province of state law enforcement, he said..... [cont'd]
