  If the "first rule of war"is to "know your enemy"- not just his weapons & tactics, but the breadth, depth, ferocity and other aspects of his cultural and ideological (theological)  motivations against you -   then  "WISHFUL THINKING"  is the diametrical opposite of being well informed about your enemy's capabilities and motivations.  In the age of  huge standing armies, push-button nuclear weapons, and orchestrated financial crashes and relentless, serial  economic sabotage,  "WISHFUL THINKING"can be as fatal a character flaw to the clueless and duped public,  as ignorance, stupidity, and unpreparedness are to men in battle against a ferocious, well-organized, and well led enemy.

NATO would unravel as Southern Europe became members of Russia’s Eurasian trade bloc, [then] American power would unravel with NATO. This is simply unacceptable to Washington
