We've never been big fans of ELP - they were always a bit too moody if not morose for our tastes - but in "I Believe in Father Christmas" Greg Lake struck the perfect chord, producing one of the best ever, and certainly most haunting of Christmas rock songs.
While the lyrics shining boldly through the song appear to be celebrating "FATHER CHRISTMAS" from a child's point of view... it is a little disconcerting to hear the refrain, "HALLELUJAH, NOEL! BE IT Heaven... OR HELL" - followed in this particular video by imagines of bombs, machine-guns, tanks, cannons, and huge explosions all trying to turn humans in to bits of stinking, rotting, blasted protoplasmic goo.
Upon paying closer attention to the song, we see an absolute foreshadowing of this theme of WAR vs peace... of EVIL vs good... of LIFE trying to surmount confusion, chaos, and despair - for example: "they sold me a dream of Christmas"... "they SOLD me a Silent Night"... "the told me a fairy story... till I believed in the Israelite" and other verses that hint at confusion and disappointment (while trying to surmount despair)
