This video produced by National Geographic commemorates the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce and his fierce but outnumbered Scots army fought for their lives and freedom against a massive English invasion led by King Edward II of Britain in 1314.
The video is a rare case where a cheap, psychedelic production - often using cartoon images with blood splashed across the screen to simulate violence - works perfectly to capture the grim plight that ROBERT THE BRUCE FOUND HIMSELF IN, after he murdered his rival for the Scottish crown and thus earned the wrath of the great English War King, Edward I - the undisputed bloody and remorseless CONQUEROR of WALES, who demanded that upon his own death that has crypt be inscribed with the term "HAMMER of the SCOTS" (in Latin). Despite the great victory at the Battle of Bannockburn, it still took years for the English to recognize Robert as King of the Scots.... but ROBERT'S LEADERSHIP had KEPT SCOTLAND TOGETHER under the hammer-blows of King Edward I's ferocity and atrocities, leading to the independent and respected Scotland we know today...

In our above description of the Battle of Bannockburn, 1314, we glossed over the ethnic complexities: King Edward I was able to CRUSH Scottish aspirations for independence (after King ___ died an untimely death, falling from a cliff on a dark & stormy night while travelling to see his new bride) BY PLAYING the AMBITIONS, VANITY, and ancient RIVALRIES of ONE SCOTTISH CLAN and faction against another. Ironically, ROBERT THE BRUCE had been a LOYAL AND TRUSTED MEMBER of Kind Edward's ENGLISH COURT....
and, furthermore, BOTH EDWARD I AND Robert the Bruce were of NORMAN DESCENT, the Normans of course being "North-men" (what we today would call "Vikings") who had conquered and captured territory in France (Normandy) but would adopt French language, custom, and a position of nobility close to the French crown. William the Conqueror famously (or bloodily and infamously) CONQUERED ENGLAND in 1066, placing his NORMAN KNIGHTS in brutal control over the entire English population... and King Edward I's wars to SUBJUGATE (enslave!) the Scots was a progression of his own ancestor William the Conqueror's ambitions to conquer the entire British isles. In the Battle of Culloden, the ETHNIC MIX is even more complicated! For Scots by 1754 had already TURNED PROTESTANT..... but when CATHOLIC Prince Charles - "BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE" showed up on Scottish shores to lead a REVOLT to SEIZE THE CROWN from the GERMAN born & raised Protestant KING GEORGE I of Hanover - placed on the British throne by Act of Parliament - the SCOTS CLANS RALLIED AROUND their NATIVE STUART DYNASTY - now turned CATHOLIC !!
King George's son, the DUKE OF CUMBERLAND led the British army to the north chasing Prince Charles; Scots rebel army... the Scots under ____ attempted a daring MIDNIGHT RAID that would have destroyed Cumberland's army, unprepared, in town, celebrating the Duke's birthday that evening - but the fates and tides of war turned against the Scots, and the English army had a lucky reprieve: the Scots, navigating only by moonlight, got lost and mired in swamps, unable to make it to the town where Cumberland's troops would have been easy prey,
and instead the exhausted Scots army, which had been up marching through the horrible Scots bogs all night, was cornered and trapped on an open field, and slaughtered by English canon.
The PROTESTANT CROWN - and, more specifically, the RULE OF PARLIAMENT HAD BEEN WON by Cumberland's army - the Brits would hunt down and SLAUGHTER the Highlanders after the battle, and even ENSLAVE some survivors of the Highland armies and SHIP THEM to ENGLAND's CARIBBEAN COLONIES AS (white!) Today, Hollywood has a very hard time finding hungry and lean looking men to form the cast of an army. When this documentary /film was filmed in the early 1960s, just 15 years after the devastation the British empire endured in WWII, the Scots were still hungry! and it shows in the faces of these actors.
Another thing to note about this excellent film is that Scots clansmen AND BRITISH SOLDIERS who fought the Battle of Culloden would form much of the ranks of... the AMERICAN PATRIOT ARMIES and BRITISH "Red Coat" ARMIES of the AMERICAN REVOULTION!
